Clearing land of bombs, landmines and other unexploded ordnance (called UXO) is what UXO Lao does. We employ over 600 deminers, working in 31 districts across the country. These teams work in two ways:

UXO Victims and Survivors (UXO Lao data) Around 12,000 UXO-related accidents occurred since 1973. Data gathered by UXO Lao in areas where it operates in from 1999 to present, show 934 casualties, divided into 655 injuries and 279 deaths.

UXO Lao operations reflect the generic principles of humanitarian mine action: ROVING TASKS – removes and destroys surface UXO. Increases the confidence and safety of people living in UXO affected areas to engage in their livelihoods and lead normal lives.

Savannahkhet is the most severely contaminated province in Lao PDR, with the five districts of Sepone, Vilabouly, Nong, Phine and Atsaphantong being the most affected. UXO contamination covers almost three quarters of the land area of Savannahkhet.

The Lao Government recognises UXO contamination as an ongoing development challenge in the country. UXO contamination continues to threaten the physical safety, livelihoods, and food security of people in more than 25% of villages in Lao PDR.

Khammouane is the fourth most severely UXO-contaminated province in the Lao PDR. The highest contamination occurs in the eastern district of Boualapha, a major crossing point for vehicles which entered the Ho Chi Minh trail system from Vietnam during the Indochina conflict.
