The IAR 80 was a Romanian World War II low-wing monoplane, all-metal monocoque fighter and ground-attack aircraft. When it first flew, in 1939, it was comparable to contemporary designs being deployed by the airforces of the most advanced military powers such as the Hawker Hurricane and Bf 109E. [2]

Dec 14, 2024 · The IAR 81 was an improved fighter-bomber variant, featuring the long nose and wings and bomb racks under the fuselage and wings, while the 80/81 C were heavy fighters equipped with two 20 mm MG FF or MG 151/20 cannon and Browning machine guns.

Aug 16, 2018 · The IAR-81C was the most numerous sub version to be produced. Deliveries started in early 1943. Total production for the IAR-80/81 series totaled 450 units. Production ceased after the American bombing of the Brasov factory on April 16,1944.

Aug 5, 2016 · The IAR design team proceeded in its fighter efforts and began "taking apart" the winning PZL P.24 design. The IAR design now incorporated the tail section and front-end fuselage of the PZL design into its own aircraft.

Jun 11, 2022 · The tail and rear fuselage was copied from the -24E, as was the engine, engine mounting and cowling, while a new structure was designed for forward of the cockpit.

The IAR design now integrates the PZL designed tail and forward fuselage into its own aircraft. The high monoplane wings of early PZL production fighters were abandoned in favor of a more modern low-wing monoplane suspension, which is said to have been taken directly from the design of the Italian Savoia Marchetti bomber.

Dec 21, 2023 · Though in all my research I have never seen a two tone early (pre mid 1943) camo I.A.R.80 with the light blue tail underside. There is a lot of confusion created by virtue of the fact that some of these early airframes were rebuilt, upgraded and repainted at the factory.

During the entire war, the IAR-80 (in all its variants) scored 539 confirmed kills, 90 probable and 168 on the ground. About 220 were lost in combat (to fighters and AAA) and in numerous accidents.
