Beretta MX4 submachine gun is based on the successful Beretta CX4 Storm semi-automatic carbine, originally developed for civilian and security use. It uses same blowback operated action with polymer body of the gun and fixed shoulder stock, as well as same ambidextrous controls.

The Mx4 is a no-frills, modern automatic weapon with direct recoil action, usually chambered in a German 9x19mm Parabellum pistol cartridge (another model chambered in .45 ACP). Feeding is via a detachable 30-round magazine (or pistol magazine, if desired) and aiming is via a two-position aperture sight assembly.
