Nov 10, 2021 · At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1989, BMW unveiled their new range-topping flagship: the E31 8-series. Developed at vast cost, the 8-series effectively replaced the long-running E24 6-series. However, the new machine was a bigger, grander and much more expensive offering.

The BMW E31 was the only model to be classified as the 8 Series, instantly creating a new standard as BMW's flagship model. It enjoyed a ten-year production run from 1989 to 1999.

It is powered by a range of naturally aspirated V8 and V12 petrol engines. The E31 started production just as E24 6 Series production ended; however, it is not considered a direct successor. The E31 was discontinued in 1999 due to poor sales.
