Oct 27, 2021 · We investigated using the atherosclerosis, small vessel disease, cardiac source, other cause, dissection (ASCOD) classification the distribution of the causes of large vessel occlusion related acute ischemic stroke treated by mechanical thrombectomy.

Based on experience with ASCO during the past few years [3–12], we now propose an updated version called ASCOD phenotyping. In our study population (n= 209 patients), we found an overlap of 3% of patients (ASCOD grades 1-2) and 55% of patients (ASCOD grades 1-3). This showed substantial evidence that stroke mechanism/etiology is interconnected to multiple causes.

In this new evolution of ASCO called ASCOD, we have added a 'D' for dissection, recognizing that dissection is a very frequent disease in young stroke patients. We have also simplified the system by leaving out the 'levels of diagnostic evidence', which has been integrated into grades 9 and 0.
