Xuanwu District (Chinese: 玄武区; pinyin: Xuánwǔ Qū) is one of 11 districts of Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu province, China. Xuanwu District is an urban centre located in the north-eastern part of Nanjing. It is the seat of the Nanjing Municipal Government.

Xuanwu Gate, nestled in the central-western part of the western bank of Xuanwu Lake, stands as one of the significant entrances to the city. Established in 1909 during the reign of the Qing Dynasty’s Xuantong era, it was initially known as Fengrun Gate.

Xuanwu Lake (Chinese: 玄武湖; pinyin: Xuánwǔ Hú) is located in Xuanwu District in the central-northeast part of Nanjing, Jiangsu. It is near the Nanjing Railway Station and Jiming Temple. [1] Five islands within the lake are interconnected by arched bridges.

Xuanwu Lake Scenic Area is the National AAAA Tourist Attraction, National Key Park, and National Water Conservancy Scenic Area. Archaeological evidence confirms that Xuanwu Lake is a remnant of the ancient Yangtze River channel.

Xuanwu Lake Park (玄武湖公园) is located in Xuanwu District, Nanjing, covering a total area of 5.13 square kilometers, with the lake area spanning 3.78 square kilometers and the land area 1.35 square kilometers. It officially opened to the public on August 19, 1928.

The Xuanwu lake and park is close to the city centre but really works well as a retreat from the hustle and bustle of an 8 million plus city. It is very well maintained and spotlessly clean. It's a worthwhile visit for anyone with a half day to absorb a different side of this fantastic city
