She was the daughter of Sir Thomas Dunlop Wallace, of the family of Wallace of Craigie Castle, Ayrshire. His ancestor was Sir William Wallace (1272-1305), the famous Scottish patriot who perished on the scaffold in London because he led the Scots in rebellion against the English King.
