Dec 23, 2016 · It's not a flaming bomb, it's a "shell and flame." It's a symbolt of ordnance for centuries. I think it was originally a symbol of grenadiers, the cast iron grenade they would light the fuse and throw. As with a lot of European traditions got adopted as a US ordnance symbol.
