Tongan music can be either very emotional and somewhat modern with instrumental makeup including modern brass instruments, or conversely can be more traditional and consist of only drums and voices.

The Budima (funeral) drums have a goblet shape and come in sizes ranging from large to small. They are played with the drum lying down on its side.

The Tonga produced music using various drums for different occasions. At funerals, the Valley Tonga used the Budima goblet-shaped drum. The Tonga also have an instrument similar to the mbira (a thumb piano from Zimbabwe) called the Kankobela.

This drum was purchased by Maurice Fresco in 1985 from Norma Chikawore, a well known Zimbabwean merchant. Norma would travel around Zimbabwe and Zambia, collecting the finest drums from villages and bring them to South Africa. The wood is heavy. Either Mahogany or Teak.
