Sandgrouse are known as fossils of the genus Archaeoganga from the Upper Eocene of France, some 35 million years ago, one species of which is estimated to have been about three times the size of the largest living sandgrouse species, weighing perhaps 3 lb (nearly 1.5 kg). Other fossil genera occur into the Lower Miocene, about 20 million years ago.
