Mortiis was formerly the bassist and primary lyricist for Emperor in the early '90s. He formed this band the day after he parted ways with Emperor because he wasn't into black metal anymore.

Mortiis is an electronic band from Notodden, Norway fronted by Håvard Ellefsen, who is also known as the namesake of the band. The name is a misspelling of the word "mortis", which is the pronunciation used by the band.

It might have been a hard sell to black metal fans in the late 90's when he reinvented himself with darkwave/synthpop that's very catchy, and then NIN style industrial metal after that. Basically I think he succeeded at putting gothic synth in music that wasn't too friendly to it.

At this point in my Mortiis album review series, we've talked about all of Mortiis's dungeon synth albums in the 90s. Starting in the 2000s, though, Mortiis decided to leave the dungeon synth genre in exchange for a mix of synthpop and gothic rock, leading to the start of Era II.

Mortiis has toured consistently for the past 15 years, and has shared the stage with a variety of artists and bands spanning genres ranging from black metal, to punk to industrial and EBM. Some of the bands Mortiis has toured with are Danzig, Behemoth, Apoptygma Berzerk, Combichrist, Christian Death, The Genitorturers, Deathstars, etc.
