The MGA is a sports car that was produced by MG from 1955 until 1962. The MGA replaced the MG TF 1500 Midget and represented a complete styling break from MG's earlier sports cars. Announced on 26 September 1955 [3] the car was officially launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

Valve operation: pushrod overhead valve. Carburation: Twin semi-downdraught SU. Maximum torque: 77lb ft @ 3500rpm. Clutch & Gearbox: Dry clutch, part synchromesh 4 speed manual. Brakes: Lockheed hydraulic, 10" drums all round.

When it launched, specs for the MGA 1500 in stock trim were good for its day: 68 bhp; 77 lb.-ft. of torque; top speed 91 mph; and 0-60 mph in 15 seconds. The separate body and frame, lever shocks, solid axle, rack-and-pinion steering, and low center of gravity made it handle well.

Mid 1500 gearbox - Sep 1956 to Jan 1959. Same low starter position and 1-inch 10-spline input shaft, but 1-1/16-inch 10-spline output shaft and internal rear seal. This is the most common MGA gearbox, covering about 40,751 cars. Notice also a small reinforcing rib added on the bottom of rear housing at the rear mount point.
