Adar (Hebrew: אֲדָר ‎, ʾĂdār; from Akkadian adaru) is the sixth month of the civil year and the twelfth month of the religious year on the Hebrew calendar, roughly corresponding to the month of March in the Gregorian calendar. It is a month of 29 days.

Adar is the 12th month on the Jewish calendar counting from Nisan. “When Adar enters, joy increases,” the Talmud says. This reaches its climax on the 14th of the month, as we celebrate Mordechai and Esther ’s triumph over the wicked Haman .

Adar is the only month in the Jewish calendar that comes back for seconds. The Jewish leap year, or shanah me’uberet (literally “pregnant year” in Hebrew), occurs approximately once every three years.

From the Torah's perspective, Adar is the last month of the Hebrew calendar. Adar is often described as the "month of darkness," because during Haman's time we were closer than ever to suffering total annihilation.

Adar is the sixth month of the Hebrew year (or the twelfth and final month when counting from Nissan). Like all Hebrew months, the name Adar is of Babylonian origin, corresponding to the constellation of the Fish (Pisces), visible in the night sky during this lunar month.
