Feb 10, 2009 · The HK416 is closest to the M4 so if you have years on an M4 the HK416 is likely the favorite due to familiarity, accuracy and reduced operator cleaning. If you are a new shooter (and do not hate "plastic" rifles!) the XM8 usually gets the nod due to the ergonomics, light weight and ease of use of the dual "ISM" sight.

Feb 2, 2008 · Reliability wise, the G36 should outperform the Hk416 because the G36 proprietary magazine is more reliable than STANAG mags like the SA80A2 steel magazine. The XM8, which is basically a modified G36 outperformed the Hk416 in the US army dust tests. I like the HK416s ergonomics better than the G36 ergonomics. I like the XM8 ergonomics the best.
