HMS Thanet was an S-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. Built during, and commissioned shortly after the First World War, she went on to see service in the Second World War, and was sunk early in 1942. Thanet had been one of the ships on the China Station on the outbreak of war.

S-Class destroyer ordered from Hawthorn Leslie at Newcastle under 1917-18 Programme (12th Order) in July 1917. The ship was laid down on 13th December 1917 and launched on 5th November 1918. She was the 2nd RN ship to carry this name, previously used by a Water Carrier hired in 1916 for war service. Build was completed on 3rd August 1919.

HMS Thanet (Cdr. Bernard Sydney Davies, RN (retired)) was sunk on 27 January 1942 by the Japanese destroyers Fubuki, Asagiri, Yugiri, Shirayuki (all offsite links) off Endau (east coast of Malaya) in position 02°40N, 103°42'E while attacking Japanese transport ships together with HMAS Vampire.

Thanet was hit in the engine room and was dead in the water and began to sink. Vampire attempted to lay down a smokescreen but was driven off under heavy fire, and managed to escape. Thanet sank with heavy loss of life, Shirayuki picks up only 31 survivors from HMS Thanet. They are never seen again. 40 to 60 crew managed to reach the shore.
