Effect of Retorting On the Barrier Properties of Evoh
The effect of retort processing and storage conditions on the oxygen permeability of ethylene vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) in multilayer packaging was studied. Immediately after retort processing, the oxygen permeability of EVOH increases due to plasticization by moisture.
Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) is one of the best known flexible thermoplastic oxygen barrier materials in use today. It is especially important for refrigerated and shelf-stable foods where oxygen deteriorates the quality of packaged products and reduces their shelf life.
Barrier Breakthrough - innovative oxygen-scavenging pack
Feb 4, 2015 · Used for packaging foods and beverages, the PP/EVOH container is well established because of its strong oxygen-barrier properties. It does, however, still allow some oxygen permeation that restricts the shelf life of the product. “This new solution can maintain zero oxygen permeation for four years.
PP food containers preserve oxygen barrier after retort
The REVOH technology protects the EVOH barrier layer from this "retort shock" by adding micron-sized minerals to the outer PP layers comprising of a specifically formulated blend of resins and additives to boost their moisture barrier.
Oxygen transmission of multilayer EVOH films after microwave ...
Jun 1, 2009 · Classical industrial retort sterilization processes expose food packages to high temperature, moisture, and pressure conditions. Migration of water into hydrophilic polymers such as ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) sharply reduces their oxygen barrier ability.

Achieving Enhanced Moisture Protection in Retort Processing
Jul 7, 2020 · Retort shock occurs when moisture permeates the material used on the outer layer of the rollstock, and reaches the encapsulated EVOH layer. When exposed to moisture, the EVOH loses its gas barrier properties, and can no longer effectively protect the sealed food product from oxygen permeation, eventually leading to food spoilage, waste, and ...

EFFECT OF DIFFERENT OXYGEN BARRIER POUCHES ON THE …
The pouches were four layer laminate (PET-Nylon-Barrier-CPP) with barrier layer being foil, aluminum oxide (AlOx), ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH), and nylon. Retort pouches were placed in boxes that were stored in an environmental chamber (43 °C, 50%RH).
Current solutions (EVOH / ALU) are decreasing mono-material ratio. TAKELACTM is a sustainable barrier coating Solution which can enhance heat resistance of packaging under high retort condition, gives superior gas barrier property on packaging application.
