Dire hippos gave rise to the legends of the behemoth, a massive beast that can drink entire rivers, and make the earth tremble when it walks. Although they can’t quite drink it all, dire hippos are the undisputed masters of the river in which they reside.

Dire hippopotami lurk submerged near the shores of their habitats, waiting for prey to come to the water to drink (usually just after dusk and just before dawn). Though not particularly stealthy, they are usually obscured by the water, allowing them to get close enough for a sudden, brutal attack - which is often more than enough.

Hippopotami live along the muddy banks of slow-moving rivers. They are short-legged and broad bodied, with a tough gray or brown hide. Their large bodies are extremely buoyant, and they spend most of their time either swimming or submerged while feeding upon aquatic plants.

There's no official Dire Hippo, but there is a Behemoth Hippo from the second Bestiary that's a Huge creature (so about 2 orders of magnitude larger than an adult human) and is a carnivore, being mentioned to feed largely on Dire Crocodiles.
