The BGS maps portal provides access to over 45 000 high-resolution viewing images of almost all the small, medium and large scale maps produced by the BGS since mapping started in 1832 right up to the most recent maps released in 2020.

All users are advised that our latest digital mapping is available to view via our Onshore and Offshore GeoIndex pages, and may differ significantly from the maps delivered via this portal.

Make-a-map is an interactive geological map of the British Isles. It is intended for amateur geologists, students and teachers looking for an overview of the geology of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.

The Onshore GeoIndex is now mobile friendly, opening with a simplified user interface on a smartphone or tablet. A map–based index of a wealth of information that BGS has collected or obtained from other sources.

The new 1:625 000 hydrogeological map of the UK is now available through our OpenGeoscience portal. GeoIndex (onshore) Map-based browser allowing access to index level data (water wells in the boreholes theme).
