The LAV-25 (Light Armored Vehicle) is a member of the LAV II family. [4] It is an eight-wheeled amphibious armored reconnaissance vehicle built by General Dynamics Land Systems and used by the United States Marine Corps and the United States Army.

The LAV III is fitted with a two-man turret, armed with the M242 Bushmaster 25 mm caliber chain gun and a coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun. One more 5.56 mm or 7.62 mm machine guns is positioned on top of the turret. The LAV III also has eight 76-mm grenade launchers in two clusters of four launchers positioned on each side of the turret.

The LAV III is the third generation of the Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) family of armored personnel carriers built by General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada (GDLS-C), a London, Ontario, based subsidiary of General Dynamics.

The vehicle uses a 4-wheel drive (rear wheels) transferable to 8-wheel drive with independent torsion bars and shock absorbers. The LAV-25 can run at a maximum road speed of 100 km with a maximum cruising range of 660 km.

It is powered by a 6V53T Detroit Diesel turbo-charged engine that engages it's unique 4-wheel drive (rear wheels) that's transferable to 8-wheel drive. The LAV-25 is fitted with a 360° traversing turret and armed with an M242 Bushmaster 25 mm chain gun.

The LAV II provides mobility and protection for reconnaissance, tactical mobility for effective use of firepower to defeat soft armored targets, and battlefield survivability to carry out combat missions.

These vehicles are also amphibious, meaning they have the ability to "swim" but are limited to non-surf bodies of water (no oceans).
