The plunge Wednesday of an uncontrolled E/A-18G Growler into the San Diego Bay channel between Coronado and Shelter Island ended a 71-year span of no water mishaps since flights from surrounding fields began 114 years ago at North Island.

The EA-18G Growler crashed Wednesday. Ships will be allowed to sail through the Shelter Island basin as long as they can do so safely.

A military jet crashed into San Diego Bay near Shelter Island on Wednesday, but the two crew members aboard were rescued, authorities said.

An ABC 10News crew was at the scene reporting on another story when they saw what appeared to be a military aircraft crash into the water.

A U.S. Navy jet crashed Wednesday morning off the coast of San Diego and the two crewmembers were rescued, authorities said.

Navy officials did not disclose how the wreckage may be recovered. Last winter, after a Navy MH-60R Sea Hawk crashed into the bay, the helicopter was lifted from 15 feet of water and stabilized on a barge. It was then offloaded onto a pier at Naval Base Coronado. The operation took 10 hours.

The U.S. Navy has issued a public notice to stay away from the wreckage and any debris from a crashed EA-18G Growler plane in San Diego Bay, which is still in the water off of Shelter Island.
