Firefly Aerospace landed a craft safely last week, a first for a private company. But Intuitive Machines’ mission ended when its lander wound up on its side in a crater.

The mission, aptly named “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” touched down in Mare Crisium, a large impact site filled with basaltic lava on the Moon. Blue Ghost pulled off a precision landing, touching down within a 328-foot (100-meter) target next to a volcanic feature called Mons Latreille.

The lunar lander, called Blue Ghost, settled onto the Moon's surface at 2:34 am CST (3:34 am EST; 08:34 UTC). A few dozen engineers in Firefly's mission control room monitored real-time data streaming down from a quarter-million miles away.

“Firefly is literally and figuratively over the moon,” said Jason Kim, the CEO of Firefly Aerospace in a statement. "Our Blue Ghost lunar lander now has a permanent home on the lunar surface with 10 NASA payloads and a plaque with every Firefly employee’s name."
