As Thursday approached, pressure was building at the Capitol. Minnesota House Democrats were coming up on four weeks of a historic boycott of the legislative session that kept their members out of the building.

On the 24th day of the 2025 legislative session, the Minnesota House got to work — for real this time. State of play: For the first time in over three weeks, enough members showed up at the Capitol to officially gavel in the 134-member chamber and get to business.

Under the agreement announced by House leadership Wednesday night, Republicans will control the speakership until the end of 2026. Members are expected to elect Rep. Lisa Demuth, R-Cold Spring, to that position during the floor session.
