The NFL's search for its first-ever three-peat Super Bowl champion continues. The Kansas City Chiefs were on the doorstep of making that history on Sunday, but came up just short after falling to the Philadelphia Eagles in a 40-22 rout in Super Bowl LIX.

Super Bowl performance was one for the ages, as Philadelphia locked down Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for the title.

The Kansas City Chiefs — after coming so close to an unprecedented three-peat — will be etched in history as falling one game short.

Hurts nearly led the Eagles to victory against Kansas City two years ago in Arizona, but Mahomes led a comeback and Harrison Butker kicked the game-winning field goal in the final minute for a 38-35 victory. Mahomes rallied Kansas City to an overtime victory over San Francisco last year for K.C.‘s second title in a row.
