Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she's considering a lawsuit against Google if its maps shown to U.S.-based users continue to label the Gulf of Mexico as the "Gulf of America."

Mexico is threatening to sue Google over the tech giant's use of President Trump's "Gulf of America" (renamed from Gulf of Mexico) label on its maps. Why it matters: It's the latest fallout over Trump's executive order to rename the body of water.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said President Trump’s decree is restricted to the “continental shelf of the United States” because Mexico still controls much of the Gulf.

However, Google Maps said it would update its maps so that people in America would see the Gulf of America. People in Mexico will still see the Gulf of Mexico, the name the body of water has had for 400 years. For people in the rest of the world, Google Maps will display both names.

Apple Maps, Bing Maps and Google Maps have all changed their Maps software and apps to now display Gulf of America on the body of water that's been known as the Gulf of Mexico since the 16th century.

The name change to Gulf of America is the first since the 1540s where various maps referred to it as the Mexican Gulf, Golpho de la Nueva España, and, finally Gulf of Mexico.
