A flurry of phony text messages are trying to get metro area motorists to pay off overdue EZPass fees tied to the Big Apple’s new congestion pricing plan, transportation officials said.

The Thruway Authority warns that E-ZPass or Tolls by Mail would never send texts requesting sensitive personal information such as credit card, birthday, Social Security number, or other personally identifiable information. Scam messages being sent to New York drivers have been asking them to pay an unpaid toll bill through an unverified link.

The message claims you have an unpaid toll, but it originates from a +63 number, indicating it's from the Philippines.

Law enforcement agencies are alerting drivers to be aware of a widespread E-Z Pass scam that has been making the rounds since congestion pricing started.

Authorities in states that use E-ZPass to pay tolls have warned drivers about smishing texts asking them to click on links so they divulge personal and financial information.
