The Greek island has a long history of earthquakes, but what is causing the recent series of quakes has scientists perplexed.

How long will the state of emergency last? It’s very difficult to predict how long the earthquakes will last and, as a result, when the state of emergency will come to an end. But authorities have said activity could go on for weeks.

Earthquakes have continued to rattle Greece’s volcanic island of Santorini every few minutes through the night and into Wednesday. Authorities have bolstered their emergency plans in case the hundreds of tremors over the past few days are a harbinger of a larger quake to come.

Prime Minister of Greece made a visit on Friday to the quake-stricken Santorini in the midst of newly imposed restrictions and more seismic movement.

Mitsotakis's remarks come as many people in Santorini spent Sunday night outdoors, amid fears of potential damages to buildings during the quakes. Some focal points of the tremors have been recorded at a depth of just 2km (1.2miles) below the surface.
